From Fragmented Tools to Proactive Security: IFS’s Managed F5 Environment

Technology

IFS

Overview

IFS provides Industrial AI and software for organisations that manufacture, service and manage complex assets. Its technology supports mission-critical operations across industries including manufacturing, aerospace and defence, energy, construction and telecommunications.

As its technology environment evolved, IFS wanted to simplify the way its team managed infrastructure and responded to security issues. The company partnered with FullProxy to move away from fragmented, server-by-server management and establish a more centralised, proactive security model built around F5 technology and specialist managed support.

The Challenge

IFS’s team was managing different applications and endpoints through a combination of individual servers and separate tools. This fragmented approach made it more difficult to maintain a consistent view of the environment and placed a considerable operational burden on its engineers.

Security alerts often required manual investigation across different systems and logs. Configuration changes could also involve several teams, including network and DevOps engineers, creating additional complexity and extending the time needed to introduce improvements.

IFS had strong internal engineering expertise, but much of this work required specialist F5 knowledge. Continuing to manage it internally risked taking experienced engineers away from their core responsibilities.

The business therefore needed a partner that could provide access to specialist expertise, support multiple areas of its technology stack and help it adopt a more scalable security model.

“We no longer wanted to be going onto individual servers or manually using different tools for every application and endpoint. Donald, through our FullProxy engagement, has helped us deliver these changes in a much quicker timeframe. He has helped us do this in a matter of weeks, not months.

FullProxy's Solution

FullProxy worked with IFS to consolidate and modernise the management of its F5 environment through a combination of specialist consultancy and managed services.

Our consultants helped IFS implement and evolve its F5 technologies, including its adoption of F5 Distributed Cloud. This provided the team with a centralised view of security information and a simpler way to monitor alerts and demonstrate its security activity to the wider business.

Instead of manually checking individual servers and reviewing logs across several tools, relevant security issues could be surfaced and ticketed directly to the IFS team. This enabled IFS to investigate and respond more proactively while reducing the day-to-day management required from its internal engineers.

FullProxy also worked closely with IFS’s network and DevOps specialists to implement configuration changes, demonstrate new functionality and resolve issues involving third-party suppliers.

The engagement was designed to help IFS respond to more than one immediate requirement. By developing a flexible managed environment, IFS gained a foundation that could adapt as its applications, infrastructure and security priorities changed.

This included helping the team prepare for changes affecting public TLS certificate lifespans. IFS was already adopting automated certificate services such as Let’s Encrypt, placing it in a stronger position to manage more frequent renewals and avoid the operational burden associated with shorter certificate validity periods.

The centralised visibility delivered through F5 Distributed Cloud also made it easier for Christopher and his team to demonstrate their security posture internally. Rather than relying on assurances, they could show colleagues the alerts being identified, the responses being taken and the improvements delivered.

Results and Benefits

The engagement has delivered several important operational and security benefits for IFS:

  • Centralised visibility of security alerts through a single management portal
  • Reduced reliance on individual servers and disconnected security tools
  • Less time spent manually reviewing logs and investigating alerts
  • Security issues ticketed directly to the appropriate team
  • Greater ability to identify and act on potential issues proactively
  • Specialist support without diverting internal engineers from their day-to-day responsibilities
  • Configuration changes and platform improvements delivered in weeks rather than months
  • Faster adoption of new functionality, including F5 Distributed Cloud
  • Clearer evidence of security activity and improvements for internal stakeholders
  • Faster demonstration of value from new security investments

“I have lots of great engineers working for me. But this is a specialist area, and I do not want them taken away from their day jobs.”

Application Pen Testing with Improvement Service

The Improvement Service team was using terminal-based vulnerability assessment tools, but they needed a more intuitive, user-friendly solution that could provide clear visualisation of security data while meeting the stringent security requirements of public service applications. They were looking for a tool that would streamline their vulnerability management process without sacrificing robust security analysis capabilities.
